Cheers, François Massol **** Assessment of plant-pollinator networks via metabarcoding approaches: evaluation, comparison with classic approaches and optimization to propose a next-generation biomonitoring protocol   Location: Unité Evolution, Ecologie & Paléontologie (EEP), CNRS UMR 8198, Université de Lille, Bâtiment SN2, F-59655 Villeneuve d’Ascq cedex, France   Theme: In a recently published opinion (Bohan et al., 2017, Trends in Ecology & Evolution, 32, 477-487), the implementation of next-generation biological monitoring approaches has been proposed as a cost-effective tool to detect ecosystem changes accurately and generically at a global scale in the next decade. With such an approach, Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) of DNA would provide the relative abundances of operational taxonomic units or ecological functions in the various environments of the planet Earth. Machine-learning methods would then be used to reconstruct ecological networks of interactions from these raw data from NGSs and relate them to different environmental parameters in order to detect and predict changes in ecosystems. As part of the ANR project “Next Generation Biomonitoring of change in ecosystems structure and function” (ANR NGB, principal investigator: David Bohan, INRA Dijon; coordinator for the University of Lille: François Massol), we seek to develop and test protocols based on NGS approaches to predict the structure of ecological interaction networks and hence the quality of the functioning of ecosystems and the services that depend on them.   The thesis proposed aims more particularly at developing inferential approaches on plant-pollinator networks, in continuation of studies conducted at the Evo-Eco-Paléo laboratory (ANR ARSENIC 2014-2018 and Climibio project on plant-pollinator networks in the Lille metropolis). The student’s work will consist in analyzing metabarcoding data obtained on pollen carried by previously captured insects (two capture methods were used: active capture using insect nets and passive capture using attractive pan traps), developing learning methods for reconstructing interaction networks using machine learning from molecular data, evaluating their efficiency compared to conventional methods, by comparing the networks obtained using conventional vs. NGS approaches, using the data thus obtained to assess structural differences between urban and semi-rural plant-pollinator networks, as well as the exploitation of native and non-native floral resources by pollinators in urban areas, issuing recommendations for management and monitoring structures of natural areas concerning the use of such protocols to qualify the proper functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Research Fellow/Bioinformatician , - Ref:1736224 - UCL Institute of Neurology, Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy, London Duties and Responsibilities: An exciting opportunity has arisen for a research fellow/bioinformatician to work on genomics in the epilepsies as part of a translational genomics programme under the supervision of Professor Sanjay Sisodiya. The appointee will be part of a growing ground-breaking genomics programme, which will use a large genomic dataset with very detailed phenotypes in order to realise translation of personalised medicine for people with epilepsy. The post is based at the well-known Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy with translational research facilities and onsite laboratories. The main purpose of the post is to advance understanding of the epilepsies through detailed clinical, investigational and genomic evaluation in a large cohort of people with well-characterised epilepsies. S/he will be responsible for the statistical analysis and the scientific interpretation of data. S/he will provide bioinformatics advice and support to other group members from different disciplines (and in return, will receive advice from other disciplines). S/he will be involved in research on the genomic and clinical data generated within the group, aiming for clinical application, and also as a result of collaboration with UCL Synaptopathies initiative group, and other national (e.g. Genomics England 100,000 Genomes project) and international initiatives. postdoctoral position on the Malaria Atlas Project, Oxford
The Malaria Atlas Project is opening a postdoctoral position in Oxford in geospatial modelling toward collaborating with other scientists to develop probabilistic maps of malaria risk at national and sub-national level to evaluate the efficacy of past intervention strategies and to assist with the planning of future interventions. An understanding of spatiotemporal modelling and expertise in geostatistics, random-field models, or equivalent are essential. An understanding of the epidemiology of a vector-borne disease such as malaria is desirable but not essential. You must have a PhD or equivalent experience in mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, or a similar quantitative discipline. You will contribute to and, as appropriate, lead in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles for publication of research findings from this work in open access journals. Travel to collaborators in Europe, the United States, Africa, and Asia will be part of the role. This full-time position is fixed-term until 31 December 2019 in the first instance. BECAS BIOSTATNET CEB17 La Red Nacional de Bioestadística ofrece 2 becas a jóvenes investigadores que quieran presentar sus trabajos en la Conferencia Española de Biometría (CEB2017). Cada beca cubrirá  los gastos de inscripción y alojamiento hasta un máximo de 300€.   Las condiciones para poder optar a la beca son las siguientes: Ser miembro de la Red Nacional de Bioestadística (BIOSTATNET) Estar matriculado/a como estudiante de grado o posgrado en alguna universidad. No tener más de 35 años el día que da comienzo la conferencia. Para el caso de investigadores que ya sean doctores: no pueden haber pasado más de 2 años desde la lectura de su tesis. Para optar a estas becas debe procederse de la siguiente forma:   Presentar el resumen corto (máximo una página), que corresponde al formato establecido para el CEB17, debe enviarse siguiendo el procedimiento normal de envío de resúmenes( Enviar un trabajo extendido (máximo 3 páginas), incluyendo 2 secciones: Estado del Arte y Contribuciones Originales, en formato PDF, a BIOSTATNET (,   indicando en el asunto: BECA_CEB17.   El trabajo debe seguir las indicaciones de la plantilla Latex (plantilla_eng.tex), que requiere el siguiente fichero de estilo y un gráfico:template.sty , gráfico.
