The Galicia Node, led by researcher María Xosé Rodríguez Álvarez (University of Vigo), currently has 52 members, who come from both the three Galician universities and other academic institutions at the national and international levels. Additionally, it involves the participation of members from various biomedical institutions. The research areas of the node encompass diverse topics, including, among others, semi-parametric and non- parametric regression techniques, survival analysis, goodness-of-fit tests, spatial and spatio-temporal statistics, functional data analysis, computational statistics, and statistical methods applied to massive datasets.

Main lines of investigation

The Galician Node represents a dynamic and diverse group of researchers dedicated to advancing Biostatistics. Its multidisciplinary nature is enriched and enhanced by the active participation of members from diverse biomedical institutions. The research lines of the node covers a wide spectrum, encompassing diverse topics that contribute to the
comprehensive understanding and application of statistical methods in the realm of biology and medicine. From a methodological perspective, some of the reseach line covered by the node (see poster) are:

  • Computational statistics and software developments
  • Directional statistics: circular, cylindrical and toroidal data
  • Functional data analysis
  • Goodness-of-fit tests
  • High-dimensional data analysis
  • Multiple testing/multiple comparison procedures
  • Semiparametric and nonparametric regression techniques
    • Boosting
    • Generalised Additive Models (GAMs) and extensions (e.g., GAMs for Location, Scale and Shape, GAMLSS; multivariate GAMs; mode regression)
    • Kernel and penalised spline smoothers
    • Mixed models
    • Small area estimation
    • Variable selection techniques
  • Spatial and spatio-temporal statistics
  • Statistical evaluation of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers (ROC curves and extensions without and with covariates)
  • Survival analysis
    • Censored and truncated data
    • Cure models
    • Joint models for longitudinal and survival data
    • Multi-state models

Institutions present in the node

Biostatistics consulting activities

They will be carried out in different centres, among them:

  • CHUS Research Support Unit, which provides methodological support to the centre’s clinicians.
  • Research Support Unit of the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario da Coruña (CHUAC), which provides methodological support to the centre’s clinicians.
  • Biostatistics Unit of the Faculty of Medicine of the USC, which integrates Biostatistics research with training and its transfer, through co-authorship of the resulting documents and collaboration in research projects in Biomedicine and Statistics.
